The Making of History, a Hero, and a Super Bowl Commercial

Admittedly, I am not the world’s biggest sports fan, but I am a super fan of sports stories centering around mentoring. Author of Writing from the Heart and Memoir as Medicine

One of my students, Dawn Carroll, created the album “Songs For Mary” a 15-song soundtrack that is becoming a theatrical show “If the Walls Could Talk”.

It’s easy to see how deeply personal, her project is: Dawn introduces us to a lost history and forgotten Icons, reminding us we must never stop telling our stories. We cannot let others erase history. We must stop racism.

Dawn took all of her frustrations from about rising hate, changing/erasing history, losing rights and fused it with her love for music, human rights and preservation of historic architectural l property, she found a way to process what she was feeling and write /produce a soundtrack and now its becoming a show. Yes the show is about 1940’6 show Mary Cardwell Dawson, but it is also about Dawn This is what memoir workshops are all about, finding your voice, finding the confidence to tell your story.”
